Life is a pre-existing condition.

Some words of wisdom from Crohn’s disease sufferer and massive advocate (and personal hero of mine) Mike McCready, lead guitarist of Pearl Jam. I’ve written about McCready before, but I wasn’t aware, until this short video, that he had been denied insurance coverage two times for Crohn’s related procedures. Check out the Huffington Post piece about him here.

Twitter goodness

IÂ’ll keep this one short because this story is just so awesomely succinct (and a bit older, but every time I read it I smile).

@ChrisStrouth tweeted “sh*t, I need a kidney” and then got one. Read more here = stories.twitter.com/chris_strouth

Please sir—insurance for a self-employed Crohn’s sufferer?

If you live with Crohn’s disease or some other chronic illness (or know someone who does), chances are the subjects of healthcare, insurance, and money have come up a number of times. (okay, unless you are independently wealthy and even then, I bet you complain about it!)

This piece Finding Health Insurance if You Are Self-Employed” will really strike a chord with anyone who worries about health care the way I do. If you don’t have much time, just read Jennifer Jaff’s story in particular. Jennifer is a lawyer who not only runs Advocacy for Patients With Chronic Illness, but suffers from Crohn’s disease as well.

Jennifer stated, “I donÂ’t know if people who donÂ’t have chronic illnesses can really understand this, but I have worked full time my entire adult life…And there is only one thing that could bankrupt me, and it is my health. I could lose every penny I own from one serious hospitalization without insurance.”

Nail on the head.
